For lakhs of young men and women across Tamil Nadu, tomorrow is the day the countdown begins. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) will release the notification for the Combined Civil Services Examination-IV — the Group 4 examination — on October 6, 2026, on its official website tnpsc.gov.in, as laid out in the commission's annual planner. The numbers tell the story of both the opportunity and the desperation. Around 10,000 vacancies are expected to be filled through this cycle — more than double the 4,662 posts notified in the 2024 cycle. Against that, roughly 15 lakh applications are expected. That is a contest of about 150 aspirants for every single seat: Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Typist, Steno-Typist, Personal Clerk, Field Assistant, Forest Guard, and more. The written examination has been scheduled for December 20, 2026 — a single-day, pen-and-paper test. Applications open with the notification tomorrow and are expected to run for about a month. The minimum qualification for most posts is SSLC (10th pass), with the age band generally 18 to 32 years (21 to 32 for Village Administrative Officer), plus relaxations for reserved categories. There is no negative marking and no interview: selection rests on the written examination, followed by certificate verification and counselling. The timing sharpens the stakes. The previous cycle's examination was held on July 12, 2025, and its final result was declared only on September 29, 2026 — barely a week ago. Thousands of candidates who missed that cut-off will now throw themselves straight into the next race, many of them preparing while working menial jobs or supporting families on the promise of a government post. That 150-to-1 ratio is not just an examination statistic; it is a measure of Tamil Nadu's jobs crisis. Every year, the Group 4 notification is the single largest doorway into secure government employment for SSLC-qualified youth — and every year, the doorway narrows while the crowd outside grows. The new TVK government, which came to power promising change for the state's youth, will be judged in part on whether this cycle is conducted fairly, swiftly, and transparently: no leaked papers, no interminable delays between examination and appointment, no opacity in counselling. For the aspirants, the advice is simple and urgent. Read the notification in full tomorrow — eligibility, reservation rules, exam pattern, syllabus, and the exact vacancy breakup, all of which will be published with the notification PDF. Begin with the compulsory Tamil eligibility paper, where the 40 per cent minimum has ended many a campaign, and plan backwards from December 20. Tomorrow, the notification. December 20, the examination. Between them, 15 lakh dreams and 10,000 chairs.
