A bus journey that began as a pilgrimage of grief ended in a second tragedy on Saturday morning, when a private bus carrying mourners to a funeral overturned on the Ananthagiri ghat road in Telangana's Vikarabad district, killing at least three people and injuring several others. The bus, with about 54 passengers on board, was travelling from Kesaram near Patancheru in Sangareddy district to Chintakunta village in Dharur mandal, where the mourners were to attend a funeral. As the vehicle descended the steep, winding Ananthagiri ghat road, the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend, police said. According to the Vikarabad police, the brakes of the bus failed suddenly on the downhill stretch, sending the vehicle off the road before it toppled. Local residents were the first to reach the scene and pulled trapped passengers from the overturned bus before police and emergency teams arrived. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals; several are reported to be in critical condition. Police are still establishing the identities of the dead and the injured. Vikarabad District Collector Deepak Tiwari and Superintendent of Police Sneha Mehra visited the accident site and reviewed the rescue and relief arrangements. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed shock and grief, conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, and directed officials to closely monitor the condition of the injured and provide all necessary support. The crash has once again thrown the spotlight on the safety of private buses on ghat roads. Brake failures on downhill stretches are a recurring feature of India's highway accident reports, and questions inevitably follow about fitness certification, maintenance standards, and whether heavy passenger vehicles should be carrying full loads down roads designed for a different era of traffic. A police investigation is under way; answers, as always, will arrive later than the grief.
